Ayrton specialises exclusively in timber, offering unmatched expertise in replicating traditional details. We do not work with other materials like uPVC, aluminium, or Crittall. Our fitters are highly skilled joiners, ensuring that timber, the most durable and authentic choice for London property windows and doors, is used throughout our projects.
We use a Meranti hardwood on external cills, the rest of unit being an engineered redwood (Latvian pine) engineered using the glue and laminate process – 4 pieces of timber glued and laminated parallel to each other. Our factory with 60 years of experience has found this to be the best method for window and door manufacturing as hardwood clearly has its advantages with standing water whilst engineered redwood (pine) is beneficial to counteract against movement that naturally comes with timber, this is the same combination we use on around 4,000 windows & doors and windows a year.
The builder’s quote will almost certainly be significantly cheaper than our offering, but this is for a very good reason! So often than not, a builder will outsource and not invest into the best quality wood, glazing and security locks, or offer aftercare.
Our approach is always timber full replacement and replicating original timber doors like-for-like. We specialise in paying close attention to detail such as the traditional profiles, glazing bars, arches, cills and architraves. By replacing everything in its entirety we can offer you a lifetime guarantee and a thermally efficient solution that looks fantastic and in keeping with the property.
Why we do not recommend part replacement:
- When you are bonding new timber with old timber – new timber will settle at a completely different rate to the old timber, what this means is in two years or so when the new timber settles it settles at a completely different rate to the old timber and this eventually becomes an aftercare nightmare.
- Trying to fit perfectly straight timber sashes into old boxes that have moved simply do not fit. This leads poor draught exclusion and more friction in sliding.
- Old boxes are made to hold single glazed units. Thin double-glazed units that are squeezed into old boxes will not provide you with the thermal efficiency of a full replacement.
- Read the fine print when it comes to guarantees and aftercare, they are often non-existent. We often see people buy windows & doors twice, part replacement is an easy sell because of price and profit margins are greater with this approach. Part replacement is appealing when looking at the numbers and that is where it ends.
No, we specialize exclusively in external windows and doors. While we can manufacture internal doors, they are constructed to external specifications, including toughened double glazing and multi-point locking security, which typically makes them less suitable for internal use.

Yes, our fitters will repair any damage caused to your plasterwork to a pre-decorative standard. Typically, there will be 5-10cm of disruption to the plasterwork, which our fitters will repair. Please note that this repair is done to a pre-decorative standard, so final paint touch-ups on your walls will be necessary either by a third party or by yourself if you are comfortable with painting.
